Great Britain out of men's hockey tournament after 1-1 draw with Spain

Great Britain's men failed to make it through to the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games hockey tournament after a 1-1 draw with Spain in their final Pool A match.

Bobby Crutchley's side needed to better New Zealand's result against Belgium to advance, but had to settle for a point after Sam Ward cancelled out David Alegre's opener.

Great Britain also had two goals ruled out against the Spaniards, who had won three of their other four games and already qualified for the last-eight.

As it transpired, even a British win would not have been enough as New Zealand ended Belgium's 100 per cent record with a 3-1 win.

"We are disappointed with the result given how we dominated the game," Crutchley said. "We started the tournament far too slowly."

Britain's women are already in the quarter-finals and they play the United States, who have also won their first four Pool B matches, on Saturday.
