Patrick Kane's scoring streak came to an end as the Chicago Blackhawks were shut out 3-0 by the Colorado Avalanche.
Kane had scored a point in 26 successive games, a franchise record and the longest streak by an American player, but he was unable to extend it thanks to a fine display from Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov.
Varlamov made 29 saves for his first shutout of the campaign and the Blackhawks failed to live up to the heights of their recent victories over the Nashville Predators and the Vancouver Canucks.
Chicago goalie Corey Crawford came into the game looking for a third successive shutout, but he was beaten 14:30 into the first period when Matt Duchene fired in a shot from the left circle over his glove.
Defenseman Zach Redmond made it 2-0 early in the second period and Varlamov made superb saves to deny Bryan Bickell and Teuvo Teravainen in quick succession to maintain his clean sheet.
Gabriel Landeskog removed any doubt with Colorado's third goal two minutes from full-time, just after Crawford had been pulled from the Blackhawks goal.
Kane failed to get a shot on goal, with his three efforts blocked before they even reached Varlamov, ending a superb run of form that had started on October 17 and saw him produce 40 points.
He said: "It was a good run. I didn't have it tonight, so you know, I can just focus on playing hockey, and it'll be nice not to talk about it any more.
"When you have to talk about it every day, it gets a little taxing, but I'm excited just to play hockey now.
"It was fun breaking the American record. I was happy with that, and to break the franchise record too, that was pretty special as well. It was definitely fun while it lasted."
