Emery hopes for Elliott 'solution' as he misses Basel trip
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has revealed on-loan Liverpool forward Harvey Elliott has been left out of their squad for Thursday's Europa League trip to Basel as they search for a "solution" to his future.
The 22-year-old has struggled for game time under Emery since joining Villa in the summer on Deadline Day.
He has made just five appearances for Villa in all competitions this season, and Villa would reportedly be obligated to sign him for 35m if he plays 10 games.
Emery said: We are speaking with him and about his situation. He is not here with us.
Hopefully, we can get the best for him and the best for us.
I respect him as a player and as a person. He is training well, but we have one circumstance with him.
Hopefully we can get a solution for him to try to play consistently and try to continue in his career with us or not.
Elliott has not featured in Villa's last seven Premier League squads, with his last appearance for the club coming at the start of October as he came off the bench in their 2-0 Europa League win at Feyenoord.
Emery said: I have spoken with him two or three times about the situation we have with him.
Firstly, my decision and also the situation. He is on loan playing with us, but he is not definitely adding to us with a permanent contract.

Lingard scored in a 1-1 draw against Melbourne City in the AFC Champions League, before a farewell ceremony took place post-match.

Saudi clubs considering January move for Salah after Liverpool fallout
Latest from Your Site News' Kaveh Solhekol:
Saudi Arabian clubs want to sign Mohamed Salah but they would have to have a clear indication that he is ready to play there before making a move for the Liverpool forward.
Salah would be a dream signing for the Saudi Pro League and senior football officials in the Kingdom believe his signing would be seen as a homecoming for all Arabs.
Salah has shown what can be achieved at the highest level by Arab and African footballers so his potential signing would have special meaning - far beyond the borders of Saudi Arabia.
As things stand, though, Liverpool have not received any approach for the player.
Clubs such as Al Ittihad and Al Hilal have tried to sign Salah over the past two years but the player has never shown the firm desire to leave the highest level of club football in Europe and move to the SPL.
Al Ittihad made a 150m verbal offer to sign Salah in September 2023 but the move was made very late in the window when the chances of a deal were slim.
There was a real prospect of Salah moving to the SPL before he signed a new Liverpool contract in April but talks were also held about a free transfer with rival clubs in the Premier League and Europe.
Salahs representatives have good relations with senior Saudi football officials and it is only a matter of time before Salah moves there - but only when he believes the time is right.
Any move for Salah would involve the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia and the Kingdoms Ministry of Sport.
SPL clubs have changed strategy and are now targeting younger players rather than stars approaching the end of their careers, but an exception would always be made for Salah.
However, Saudi officials believe they should no longer pay players more than they earn in Europe. They believe the quality of life in Saudi Arabia is better than Europe and playing in the SPL should be seen as an opportunity and a privilege rather than just a money-making exercise.
QPR auction only existing Odemwingie shirt
QPR will be auctioning the only Peter Odemwingie shirt that was made ahead of his failed move from West Brom to QPR in January 2013.
Odemwingie, then of West Brom, thought he had secured a Deadline Day switch to QPR in January 2013 and drove to Loftus Road believing he would complete the formalities on the deal.
Instead, the Nigeria international was left outside Loftus Road in his car and refused entry into the stadium after both clubs maintained a fee had not been agreed.
In preparation for his transfer, QPR's head of retail Francis Atkinson made up a Odemwingie shirt, which is now being auctioned by the club on Wednesday at 4pm.
'Aston Villa exploring deal for Gremio forward Alysson'
Aston Villa are exploring a deal for Gremio forward Alysson, according to The Athletic.
It is claimed Villa are expected to make an offer for the 19-year-old, with the right-winger fitting the profile of the attacker the club want.
Unai Emery's side have reportedly already registered a strong interest in Alysson, who scored once and provided two assists in the Brazilian top flight this season.
The report also says that, as well as potentially signing a winger in January, Villa are keen to recruit a centre-forward to provide depth behind Ollie Watkins.
Villa's reported winter window plans come with the club just three points off Premier League leaders Arsenal after they defeated the Gunners 2-1 at home on Saturday.
Villa also sit third in the Europa League table and are on course to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.
